Admin access to your router isn’t everyday affair. It is required only when you need to take care of a network-wide issue or make alterations to your network. It is needed in instances like when you wish to set up port forwarding rules, configure firmware updates and several others.

Steps to Access Router as an Administrator
- Firstly make sure your computer/laptop is connected to the router via. Wireless connection or an ethernet cable.
- It is important for you to know the IP address of your router. Typically, routers are made to use a default address like 192.168.0.1, 192.168.1.1, or 192.168.2.1 If these addresses don’t work and you are unsure what your particular router’s default IP address is, or it’s not the default address anymore since you have changed it follow the below steps to find out:
- Open Control Panel, accessible via the Start Menu in most versions of Windows
- Once Control Panel is open, tap or click on the Network and Internet link.
- In the Network and Internet window…
- Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista: Tap or click on Network and Sharing Center, most likely the link at the very top.
- Windows XP Only: Click the Network Connections link at the bottom of the window and then skip to Step 5 below.
- On the left margin of the Network and Sharing Center window…
- Windows 10, 8, 7: Tap or click on Change adapter settings.
- Windows Vista: Click on Manage network connections.
- On the Network Connections screen, locate the network connection that you want to view the default gateway IP for.
- Double-tap or double-click on the network connection. This should bring up an Ethernet Status or Wi-Fi Status dialog box, or some other Status, depending on the name of the network connection.
- This will open the connection Status window, tap or click on the Details… button.
- In the Network Connection Details window, locate either the IPv4 Default Gateway or IPv6 Default Gateway under the Property column, based on which network type you’re using.
- The IP address listed as the Value for that property is the default gateway IP address Windows is using at the moment.
- Now use the default gateway IP address to troubleshoot the problem
- Open a web browser like Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer, Chrome or Firefox, and request a connection to the router using its IP address.
- Enter the administrative login information to authenticate and access the admin settings.
What if you can’t access your router despite this?
Despite following the above steps (adding username and password) if you are not able to access your router or it is giving out an error message, Netgear tech support recommends your PC might not be connected to the correct router.
It might be also due to the wrong combination of username and password.
If you still feel everything is correct, try the following:
- Reboot the router
- Temporarily disable the firewall
- Reset your router to factory defaults
